What is DTF?
Direct-to-Film DTF Transfers are a modern method used in the textile printing industry to create vibrant and durable designs as simple to apply iron-on vinyl. Here’s a brief explanation of the process and how these transfers are produced:
DTF transfer involves printing designs directly onto a special film, which is then transferred onto fabric using heat and pressure. This technique allows for detailed and vivid prints, even on dark or difficult-to-print fabrics, and can be used on a wide range of materials including cotton, polyester, and blends.
DTF transfers have gained popularity as a cost-effective and versatile alternative to other methods like screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing.
How are DTF Transfers Produced?
- Design Preparation:
- The first step is to create or select a design using graphic design software. This design can include complex images, gradients, and fine details.
- Printing the Design:
- The design is printed onto a special Transfer film using a DTF printer. This printer uses water-based, eco-friendly inks, typically including a white ink layer that ensures the design’s colours are opaque and vibrant on any fabric colour, that produces an easy to press iron-on vinyl.
- The printing process usually involves printing a mirror image of the design.
- Powder Application:
- A thermoplastic adhesive powder
- Curing:
- Oven cured ready for transfer. This step ensures the powder adheres firmly to the ink and remains in place during the transfer process.
- Transfer Process:
- Place the film on the fabric, with the printed design facing the material.
- A heat press machine applies heat and pressure to transfer the design from the film to the fabric. The typical temperature range is around 160-180°C (320-356°F) for about 15-20 seconds, depending on the fabric type.
- Peeling:
- Peel the film away, leaving the design on the fabric.
